Execution

  1. 1
Place your feet slightly wider than hip-width apart, with the kettlebell on the floor in front of you.
  2. 2
Slightly bend your knees and push your hips back while gripping the kettlebell with both hands.
  3. 3
Swing the kettlebell back between your legs by pushing your hips back.
  4. 4
Explosively swing the kettlebell upward by driving your hips forward and extending your body. The kettlebell should reach chest height, not higher.
  5. 5
Allow the kettlebell to swing back between your legs in a controlled motion while pushing your hips back again.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves explosive power, which is useful for virtually every sport.
  • Increases cardiovascular fitness without the need for traditional cardio exercises.
  • Helps burn fat through the high intensity of the exercise.
  • Improves posture and stability by emphasizing the core and lower back.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Bending too much at the knees as if performing a squat. The movement comes from the hips.
  • ! Swinging the kettlebell too high. This can lead to shoulder strain.
  • ! Failing to keep your back straight during the exercise, which can lead to injuries.

Primary Muscles

The Kettlebell Swing primarily trains the hamstrings, glutes, lower back, shoulders, and core.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the kettlebell swing is too intense, first try the kettlebell deadlift to build strength.
  • For more of a challenge, try the single-arm kettlebell swing to improve stability and coordination.
  • Use a lighter kettlebell if you are just starting, and increase the weight as you become stronger.
