Execution

  1. 1
Start on your hands and knees in a tabletop position, with your knees directly under your hips and your hands directly under your shoulders.
  2. 2
Ensure that your back is straight and your neck is aligned with your spine.
  3. 3
Engage your abdominal muscles to stabilize your spine.
  4. 4
Lift one leg out to the side while keeping your knee bent, until your thigh is parallel to the floor. Keep your hips facing forward.
  5. 5
Slowly and with control return your leg to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions before switching legs.

Benefits

  • Improves hip mobility and flexibility.
  • Strengthens and tones the glutes.
  • Helps stabilize the core and lower back.
  • May help reduce hip and lower back pain.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lifting the leg too high, which can cause the hips and lower back to rotate instead of keeping them stable.
  • ! Failing to keep the core active, resulting in an arched back instead of a neutral spine.

Key Muscles

The Fire Hydrant primarily targets the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus in your glutes, as well as the muscles in your hips. Your core and lower back are also trained indirectly for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, you can place a resistance band around your thighs.
  • For lower intensity, make the movement smaller or reduce the number of repetitions.
  • Other variations such as the Donkey Kick or Bird Dog can also help further strengthen and tone the glutes and hips.
