Clean

The clean is a dynamic compound exercise that requires a combination of strength and technique. This exercise is unique because it activates your entire body and particularly improves explosive strength, which is essential for many sports.

Execution:

  1. 1
Begin with the barbell on the floor, just in front of your feet. Stand in a squat position with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Grip the barbell with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Keep your back straight and chest up, and pull the barbell upward along your body by extending your legs.
  4. 4
Once the barbell passes your thighs, accelerate the movement and explosively pull the barbell upward while keeping your elbows high and out to the sides.
  5. 5
Catch the barbell at shoulder height while descending into a squat position.
  6. 6
Stand upright while holding the barbell on your shoulders.
  7. 7
Lower the barbell back to the starting position in a controlled manner and repeat.

Benefits:

  • Improves overall body strength and muscle mass.
  • Increases explosive strength, which is useful for sports such as sprinting and jumping.
  • Helps improve coordination and athletic abilities.
  • Stimulates metabolism and may contribute to fat burning.

Common Mistakes:

  • ! Rounding your back during the lift — keep your back straight to prevent injuries.
  • ! Lifting the barbell too far from your body — keep the barbell close for greater control and efficiency.
  • ! Starting the pull too quickly — build up the speed and accelerate fully only once the barbell passes your thighs.

Key Muscles:

  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstrings
  • Gluteus (gluteal muscles)
  • Trapezius
  • Deltoids (shoulders)
  • Lower back

Possible Alternatives:

  • Power Clean: Use a less deep squat when catching the barbell.
  • Hang Clean: Begin with the barbell at knee height instead of on the floor.
  • Dumbbell Clean: Use dumbbells instead of a barbell for a different grip and stabilization challenge.
