Execution

  1. 1
Find an incline bench and set the bench to an angle of approximately 30 to 45 degrees.
  2. 2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and lie back on the bench. Hold the dumbbells at shoulder width with your arms fully extended above you.
  3. 3
Inhale and slowly lower the dumbbells in an arcing motion until they are approximately level with your chest.
  4. 4
Exhale as you press the dumbbells back to the starting position by squeezing your chest muscles.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves muscle definition in the upper chest.
  • Helps develop a balanced chest.
  • Strengthens the shoulders and triceps.
  • May help improve posture by strengthening the upper back and shoulders.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movement too quickly: Take time for both the lowering and lifting phases to achieve maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy: This can lead to poor form and possible injuries. Start light and gradually increase the weight.
  • ! Lowering the dumbbells too far: This can place unnecessary stress on the shoulders. Make sure the dumbbells do not come lower than your chest.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the upper chest muscles (pectoralis major), but also trains the triceps, shoulders (deltoids), and, to a lesser extent, the back muscles.

Possible Alternatives

  • Use a barbell instead of dumbbells for a different variation.
  • Change the angle of the incline bench to target different areas of the chest muscles.
  • Add a rotation to your wrists at the top of the movement for additional activation of the chest muscles.
