Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on a flat bench with a dumbbell in both hands above your chest. Hold the dumbbell with both hands underneath the upper plate, arms extended.
  2. 2

  3. 3
Make sure to perform the movement from your shoulders, not your elbows.
  4. 4
Exhale and bring the dumbbell back to the starting position, using the strength of your chest and back muscles.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves shoulder flexibility.
  • Helps develop a fuller chest and a wider back.
  • May contribute to better posture by strengthening the back muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lowering or raising the dumbbell too quickly: This can lead to injuries. Use a controlled movement.
  • ! Lowering too far behind your head: This can place unnecessary stress on the shoulders. Stop when you feel a good stretch.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy: Start with a lighter weight to master the proper technique.

Primary Muscles

The Dumbbell Pullover primarily trains the pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi. The triceps and the muscles around the shoulders (deltoids) are also engaged to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • Use a barbell instead of a dumbbell for a different grip and intensity.
  • Perform the exercise on an incline or decline bench for variation in muscle activation.
  • If you do not have access to weights, you can use a filled water bottle or another heavy object as an alternative.
