Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on a flat bench with a dumbbell in both hands above your chest. Hold the dumbbell with both hands underneath the top plate, arms extended.
  2. 2
Inhale and slowly and controllably lower the dumbbell behind your head while keeping your arms extended.
  3. 3
Make sure to perform the movement from your shoulders, not your elbows.
  4. 4
Exhale and bring the dumbbell back to the starting position above your chest.

Benefits

  • Improves shoulder flexibility.
  • Helps develop a fuller chest and wider back.
  • May contribute to better posture by strengthening the back muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Bending the elbows during the exercise, which reduces its effectiveness.
  • ! Lowering and raising the dumbbell too quickly, resulting in a loss of control.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing technique to deteriorate.

Primary Muscles

The Dumbbell Pullover primarily trains the pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi. The triceps and the muscles around the shoulders, the deltoids, are also engaged to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • Use a barbell instead of a dumbbell for variation.
  • Perform the exercise on a decline bench for a more intensive workout of the lower chest muscles.
  • If you do not have access to weights, you can use a resistance band for a similar movement.
