Execution

  1. 1
Lie flat on the floor with your knees bent and your feet firmly on the floor.
  2. 2
Grip a dumbbell in one hand and hold it above your chest with your arm fully extended.
  3. 3
Inhale and slowly lower the dumbbell by bending your elbow. Keep your elbow close to your body.
  4. 4
Once your upper arm touches the floor, press the dumbbell back to the starting position while exhaling.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions before switching arms.

Benefits

  • Improves muscle balance and symmetry between both sides of the body.
  • Increases shoulder stability by isolating one arm at a time.
  • Promotes core stability and strength because you must brace your core to remain stable during the exercise.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly: Use a controlled movement to achieve maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Keeping the elbow too far from the body: This can lead to unnecessary stress on the shoulder.
  • ! Not fully extending the arm: Make sure to fully extend your arm for a full range of motion.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the chest muscles (pectoralis major), but it also trains the triceps, shoulders (deltoids), and, to a lesser extent, the back muscles.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the exercise is too challenging, try the Two-Arm Floor Press first to become accustomed to the movement.
  • For an extra challenge, try performing the exercise on an unstable surface such as an exercise ball to engage the core more.
  • Use a heavier dumbbell or increase the number of repetitions to increase the intensity.
