Execution

  1. 1
Find a decline bench and lie on it with your back supported. Your feet should rest firmly on the floor or on the designated supports.
  2. 2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip (palms facing each other) and hold them above your chest with your arms extended.
  3. 3
Inhale and slowly and controllably lower the dumbbells to the sides of your chest. Keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle throughout the movement.
  4. 4
Exhale as you press the dumbbells back to the starting position by contracting your chest muscles.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and defines the lower chest muscles.
  • Improved muscle balance and symmetry between the upper and lower chest.
  • Increased strength in the triceps and shoulders due to the unique angle of the exercise.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lowering or pressing the weights too quickly, which can lead to injuries. Focus on a controlled movement.
  • ! Failing to keep your back flat on the bench, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise and increases the risk of injury.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing your technique to deteriorate. Start with lighter weights and increase gradually.

Key Muscles

The primary focus is on the lower chest muscles (pectoralis major). The triceps and front deltoids (anterior deltoids) are also engaged during the exercise.

Possible Alternatives

  • If you do not have access to a decline bench, you can perform a similar movement on a flat bench or with feet-elevated push-ups.
  • For an extra challenge, perform the exercise with a pause at the bottom of the movement to make the muscles work harder.
  • Use a cable machine for constant tension on the chest muscles throughout the movement.
