Execution

  1. 1
Lie on a flat bench with your feet firmly on the floor.
  2. 2
Grip the barbell with an underhand grip (palms facing you) and keep your hands closer together than in a standard bench press.
  3. 3
Slowly lower the bar to the bottom of your chest while keeping your elbows close to your body.
  4. 4
Press the bar upward until your arms are fully extended without locking your elbows.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the triceps in a unique way.
  • Helps develop a strong upper chest.
  • May help improve overall bench press performance.
  • Less stressful on the shoulders than a traditional bench press.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly: Use a controlled movement to train the muscles effectively.
  • ! Keeping your hands too far apart: This reduces the effectiveness for the triceps.
  • ! Allowing your elbows to move too far away from your body: This can lead to unnecessary stress on the shoulders.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the triceps brachii, but the upper chest muscles (pectoralis major) and the front of the shoulders (anterior deltoids) are also trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • If you do not have access to a barbell, you can use dumbbells for a similar movement.
  • For a lighter variation, you can perform the exercise on a Smith machine.
  • To increase the intensity, try the exercise with a slower repetition tempo or add a pause at the bottom of the movement.
