Barbell Pullover to Press
The Barbell Pullover to Press is a dynamic compound exercise that engages both your upper body and core strength. This exercise combines the benefits of a pullover with those of an overhead press, allowing you to train multiple muscle groups in one fluid movement.
Execution
-
1
Lie on your back on a flat bench and hold a barbell with both hands above your chest, arms extended.
-
2
Inhale and slowly lower the barbell behind your head in an arc, keeping your arms slightly bent.
-
3
Stop when your arms are parallel to the floor or as far as feels comfortable.
-
4
Exhale and bring the barbell back to the starting position above your chest.
-
5
Without pausing, immediately perform an overhead press by pressing the barbell above your head, keeping your arms fully extended.
-
6
Lower the barbell back to your chest and repeat the combination for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
The Barbell Pullover to Press improves upper-body muscle strength and mass, promotes shoulder stability, and increases shoulder flexibility. In addition, this exercise stimulates coordination between different muscle groups and improves overall functional strength.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly: Focus on a controlled movement to achieve maximum muscle activation.
- ! Leaning too far backward during the pullover: This can cause unnecessary strain on the shoulders and lower back.
- ! Pressing the barbell too far above your head: Make sure you press the barbell directly above your chest to activate the correct muscle groups.
Targeted Muscles
This exercise targets the pectoralis major, triceps, and shoulders (deltoids), and to a lesser extent the back muscles (latissimus dorsi) during the pullover phase. The overhead press primarily emphasizes the shoulders and triceps.
Possible Alternatives
- Use dumbbells instead of a barbell for a greater range of movement and to engage the stabilizing muscles more.
- Perform the pullover on a stability ball instead of a bench to challenge the core muscles further.
- Integrate a pause between the pullover and the press to reduce the intensity and place more focus on each individual movement.
