Execution

  1. 1
Find an elevated surface such as a step or a thick book and stand on it with the balls of your feet. Make sure your heels hang in the air.
  2. 2
Hold on to something for balance, such as the back of a chair or a wall.
  3. 3
Slowly lower your heels below the level of the elevated surface until you feel a stretch in your calf muscles.
  4. 4
Then push yourself upward by contracting your calf muscles until you are standing on your toes and feel a peak contraction in your calf muscles.
  5. 5
Slowly lower yourself again and repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Increased range of motion for maximum muscle development.
  • Improves balance and stability by training the ankles and the smaller stabilizing muscles.
  • May help improve performance in sports that involve a lot of jumping.
  • Strengthens the muscles around the Achilles tendon, which may help prevent injuries.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Not lowering or rising fully: Make sure to use a full range of motion for maximum exercise effectiveness.
  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly: A slow, controlled movement creates more muscle tension and better results.
  • ! Leaning too much on the object you are holding: Try to use only light support for balance, not to push your body upward.

Target Muscles

The primary muscle group trained with this exercise is the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus). Your ankles and the stabilizing muscles around your lower leg are also trained to a small extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the Elevated Standing Calf Raise is too intense, you can start with the regular Standing Calf Raise without an elevated surface.
  • To increase the intensity, you can hold weights in your hands or use a weight vest.
  • Another variation is the Seated Calf Raise, which places more emphasis on the soleus muscle.
