Benefits

This exercise offers a unique combination of strength and cardiovascular training. It helps improve muscular endurance and upper-body strength while also contributing to better coordination and stability. In addition, it can provide a fun variation from standard dumbbell exercises.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movements too quickly: Use a controlled movement to train the muscles effectively and prevent injuries.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy: Start with lighter weights to ensure proper form and gradually work your way up.
  • ! Not fully extending: Make sure to fully extend your arm with each punch for maximum effectiveness.

Instructions

  1. Find a comfortable chair without armrests and sit with your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in each hand and keep them at shoulder height with your elbows bent.
  3. Fully extend one arm in front of you as if throwing a punch, while keeping the other dumbbell at your shoulder.
  4. Return the extended arm to the starting position and repeat the movement with the other arm.
  5. Alternate between both arms for the desired number of repetitions.

Targeted Muscles

The Seated Dumbbell Punch primarily targets the shoulders (deltoids), triceps, and chest muscles (pectoralis major), and to a lesser extent the biceps. The muscles in your core are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

To adjust the intensity of the Seated Dumbbell Punch, you can experiment with the weight of the dumbbells or increase the speed of the movement. For an additional challenge, you can also perform the exercise standing, which requires more stability and core strength. Another variation is to add a twisting movement with your torso with each punch to also train the obliques (the side muscles of the abdomen).
