Execution

  1. 1
Sit on the end of a bench with your legs spread apart. Hold a dumbbell in one hand.
  2. 2
Lean slightly forward and place the back of your upper arm against the inside of your thigh. Ensure that your arm is fully extended.
  3. 3
Inhale and curl the dumbbell up toward your shoulder by moving only your forearm. Keep your upper arm still against your thigh.
  4. 4
Squeeze your biceps firmly at the top of the movement and hold this position briefly.
  5. 5
Exhale and slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch arms.

Benefits

  • Increased isolation of the biceps for more effective muscle building.
  • Improved muscle definition and shape of the biceps.
  • Reduced risk of compensation by other muscles, which often occurs with standing biceps exercises.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight, which causes technique to deteriorate.
  • ! Not fully extending the arm in the starting position, which leads to less muscle activation.
  • ! Moving the upper arm during the exercise, which reduces its effectiveness.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle group trained with the Concentration Bicep Curl is the biceps brachii. The brachialis and brachioradialis are also engaged to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • Standing Dumbbell or Barbell Bicep Curl for a variation that requires more stability.
  • Hammer Curls to engage the forearm muscles more, in addition to the biceps.
  • Preacher Curls for a different form of isolation with support for the arms.
