Execution

  1. 1
Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Your palms should face your body.
  2. 2
Keep your elbows close to your body and your back straight.
  3. 3
Curl one dumbbell up toward your shoulder while keeping your forearm and wrist stable. Your palm remains facing your body throughout the movement.
  4. 4
Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with the other arm.
  6. 6
Alternate between both arms for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Effectively strengthens the biceps and forearms.
  • Improved grip strength, which is useful for other exercises and daily activities.
  • The alternating movement trains each arm separately, which helps correct muscle imbalances.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly. Use a controlled movement to maximally activate the muscles.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing your technique to deteriorate. Start with a lighter weight and increase it as you become stronger.
  • ! Moving your elbows during the exercise. Keep your elbows stable to maintain focus on the biceps.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the biceps brachii and brachialis. The forearm muscles and, to a lesser extent, the shoulder muscles are also trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • For a lighter variation, you can perform the exercise seated, which helps keep your back stable.
  • If you want to increase the intensity, try performing the exercise with a slower lowering movement or add an isometric hold at the top of the curl.
  • Another variation is to use a resistance band instead of dumbbells.
