Execution

  1. 1
Begin by lying flat on your stomach on your yoga mat, with your legs extended and your palms on the floor beside your chest.
  2. 2
Slowly press your upper body up by straightening your arms, while keeping your hips and legs on the mat.
  3. 3
Keep your shoulders low and away from your ears to avoid tension.
  4. 4
Stay in this position for 15 to 30 seconds, breathing deeply in and out.
  5. 5
Slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves spinal flexibility.
  • Strengthens the back muscles.
  • Helps relieve stress and fatigue.
  • Opens the chest and helps improve breathing.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Putting too much pressure on the arms, causing the shoulders to rise.
  • ! Lifting the hips too far off the mat, which can strain the lower back.
  • ! Not paying enough attention to breathing.

Target Muscles

Cobra Pose primarily targets the back muscles, including the erector spinae, which run along your spine. Your glutes and the muscles in your shoulders and arms are also lightly trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • For a less intense variation, try Sphinx Pose, keeping your forearms on the floor.
  • If you want more of a challenge, you can progress to Upward-Facing Dog by lifting your legs off the mat.
