Shoulder Taps
Shoulder Taps are a fantastic exercise for improving core stability while strengthening your shoulders, arms, and back. This exercise requires no equipment and can be performed almost anywhere, making it an excellent addition to your fitness routine.
Execution
-
1
Begin in a plank position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your feet hip-width apart.
-
2
Engage your abdominal muscles to keep your body in a straight line. Avoid letting your hips sag or rise.
-
3
Lift your right hand and tap your left shoulder while keeping your body as still as possible.
-
4
Return your right hand to the floor and repeat the movement with your left hand tapping your right shoulder.
-
5
Continue alternating for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves core stability and strength.
- Strengthens multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
- Helps improve balance and coordination.
- May help reduce the risk of shoulder injuries by strengthening the surrounding muscles.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly, causing your form to break down. Focus on quality over quantity.
- ! Allowing the hips to sag or rise, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise and may lead to back pain.
- ! Not maintaining enough tension in the core muscles throughout the entire exercise.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the shoulder muscles (deltoids), trapezius, chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, and core muscles, including the rectus abdominis, obliques, and muscles around the lower back.
Possible Alternatives
- To increase the intensity, try shoulder taps with your feet elevated on a raised surface or ball.
- For beginners, the exercise can be simplified by starting on the knees instead of the toes.
- Add a push-up between each shoulder tap for an extra challenge.
