Benefits

Common Mistakes

  • ! Pulling too hard on the foot, which can lead to overstretching.
  • ! Tilting the pelvis forward, which reduces the effectiveness of the stretch.
  • ! Not breathing during the stretch, which can cause muscle tension.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, the muscle group at the front of your thighs. It also helps stretch the hip flexors.

Possible Alternatives

  • If you have greater flexibility, you can try wrapping a yoga strap or towel around your foot and using it to pull your foot closer to your buttocks.
  • For a gentler variation, perform the stretch while lying on your back, with one leg bent and the other extended toward the ceiling, then gently pull the extended leg toward you.
