Execution

  1. 1
Begin with your feet hip-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height.
  2. 2
Take a large step forward with your right foot and bend both knees to move into a lunge position. Make sure your front knee does not extend past your toes.
  3. 3
While in the lunge position, press the dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended.
  4. 4
Lower the dumbbells back to your shoulders as you return to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with your left leg and alternate sides.

Benefits

  • Improves functional strength by mimicking everyday movements.
  • Increases stability and balance by training the body to function as a whole.
  • Engages the core muscles by maintaining good posture during the exercise.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward during the lunge, which can place pressure on the knees.
  • ! Failing to press the dumbbells fully overhead, which reduces the effectiveness of the shoulder press.
  • ! Not keeping the back straight, which can lead to unnecessary strain on the lower back.

Main Muscles

This exercise targets a wide range of muscle groups, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, deltoids (shoulders), and triceps.

Possible Alternatives

  • For a lighter variation, perform the exercise without weights or with lighter dumbbells.
  • To increase the intensity, you can add a jump when returning to the starting position from the lunge.
  • As an alternative to dumbbells, you can also use a barbell for the shoulder press to further challenge stability.
