Benefits

  • Improves flexibility in the hamstrings and lower back.
  • Helps prevent injuries by improving muscle elasticity.
  • May help relieve lower back pain by loosening tight muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rounded back: Try to keep your back straight while bending forward to maximize the effectiveness of the stretch and prevent injuries.
  • ! Stretching too quickly: Move slowly into the stretch and do not force yourself to reach farther than is comfortable to avoid overstretching.

Instructions

  1. Find a bench or elevated platform that you can sit on comfortably.
  2. Sit on the edge of the bench and extend one leg out on the bench, while keeping the other leg resting on the floor.
  3. Inhale and keep your back straight as you slowly bend forward from your hips, toward the extended leg.
  4. Try to reach your toes with your hands, but if you cannot, hold your ankle, calf, or knee, depending on your flexibility.
  5. Hold this position for 15–30 seconds, then switch legs.

Muscles Worked

This exercise primarily targets the hamstrings and lower back. It also helps stretch the calves and hip flexors.

Possible Alternatives

  • If you want more of a challenge, try stretching both legs at the same time by placing them both on the bench and bending forward.
  • For a less intense stretch, try performing the stretch on the floor instead of on a bench.
