Execution

  1. 1
Find an elevated surface, such as a bench or sturdy platform, where you can place your left foot.
  2. 2
Stand facing away from the elevated surface and place your left foot on it while holding a kettlebell in your right hand.
  3. 3
Make sure your right foot is far enough forward so that your knee does not extend past your toes when you lower yourself.
  4. 4
Slowly lower yourself through your right leg while letting the kettlebell hang beside your right leg.
  5. 5
Push yourself back up to the starting position by pressing your right heel into the floor.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch sides.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination through the unilateral nature of the exercise.
  • Strengthens the muscles around the knees and hips, contributing to better posture and a lower risk of injury.
  • Increases the flexibility of the hip flexors of the rear leg.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward with the upper body, which places too much pressure on the knee of the front leg.
  • ! Not keeping the rear leg active enough, which can lead to reduced stability and exercise effectiveness.
  • ! Holding the kettlebell too far away from the body, which can cause unnecessary tension in the shoulders and back.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteal muscles of the right leg. The hamstrings and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • To reduce the intensity, perform the exercise without a kettlebell or with a lighter weight.
  • For an extra challenge, use a heavier kettlebell or combine the exercise with an overhead press at the end of each squat.
  • If an elevated surface is not available, a regular split squat without an elevated surface can be a good alternative.
