Execution

  1. 1
Place your feet together and hold a barbell on your upper back, just below your neck.
  2. 2
Inhale and slowly bend your knees while pushing your hips back, as if sitting down on a chair.
  3. 3
Make sure your back remains straight and your knees do not move past your toes.
  4. 4
Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor or as low as is comfortable for you.
  5. 5
Exhale and forcefully push yourself back to the starting position.

Benefits

By placing your feet close together, you place more emphasis on the inner thighs and quadriceps, which can lead to better-defined legs and stronger glutes. In addition, this exercise helps improve your balance and coordination due to the increased demand on your core stability.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Not keeping your back straight: This can lead to unnecessary pressure on your lower back. Make sure your back is straight throughout the entire movement.
  • ! Knees moving too far forward: This can cause knee pain. Make sure your knees do not move past your toes.
  • ! Descending too quickly: A controlled movement provides greater muscle activation and reduces the risk of injury.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs), adductors (inner thighs), and gluteus maximus (glutes), and to a lesser extent the hamstrings (back of the thighs) and core for stability.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can consider using dumbbells instead of a barbell or performing the exercise without weight to focus on technique and endurance. For an extra challenge, you can also add a pause at the bottom of the squat or squat deeper, provided your flexibility allows it.
