Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination by training the whole body in one movement.
  • Increases functional strength that is useful for daily activities and sports performance.
  • Stimulates fat burning through the high energy expenditure of the combined movements.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward: Make sure your knee does not move past your toes during the lunge to avoid putting pressure on your knees.
  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner to get the most out of the exercise and prevent injuries.
  • ! Insufficient core stabilization: Keep your core tight throughout the entire exercise to protect your back.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, shoulders, triceps, and core.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners: Perform the lunge without the overhead press, or use lighter weights.
  • To increase the intensity: Use heavier weights or add a twist to the overhead press to engage the obliques more.
  • If you do not have dumbbells: Use water bottles or other household objects as weights.
