Execution

  1. 1
Find an elevated surface, such as a bench or sturdy chair, to place your right foot on.
  2. 2
Stand facing away from the elevated surface and place your right foot on it, with your toes pointing downward.
  3. 3
Take a step forward with your left leg so that, when you lower yourself, your knee forms a 90-degree angle.
  4. 4
Slowly lower yourself through your left leg while your right knee moves toward the ground. Make sure your left knee does not move past your toes.
  5. 5
Push yourself back up to the starting position using the strength of your left leg.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Benefits

The Bulgarian Split Squat offers several benefits, including improved balance, greater leg strength, and better coordination. It is also an excellent way to identify and address asymmetries between the legs.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward: This can place extra pressure on your knees. Make sure your torso remains upright.
  • ! Taking too long a step: Taking too long a step can lead to incorrect posture and a less effective workout.
  • ! Not lowering deeply enough: Try to bring your thigh parallel to the ground for maximum exercise effectiveness.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteal muscles of the front leg. The hamstrings and calf muscles are also engaged, as well as the core for stability.

Possible Alternatives

To adjust the intensity, you can vary the height of the elevated surface or add extra weight by holding dumbbells in both hands. Another variation is to lift your foot off the ground and use only your toes for stability, which makes the exercise more challenging.
