Execution

  1. 1
Begin standing with your feet hip-width apart and your arms at your sides.
  2. 2
Take a large step backward with your right foot and lower yourself into a lunge, keeping your front knee at a 90-degree angle.
  3. 3
As you lower into the lunge position, raise both arms straight in front of you to shoulder height.
  4. 4
Return to the starting position by bringing your rear leg forward and lowering your arms.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with your left leg and alternate.

Benefits

The combination of a lunge with a front raise increases your heart rate, contributing to fat burning. It also improves your balance, coordination, and core stability. In addition, it helps build strength in both the lower- and upper-body muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward: Make sure your torso remains upright during the lunge to reduce pressure on your knees.
  • ! Raising your arms too high or too low: Keep your arms at shoulder height during the front raise to target the correct muscles and prevent injuries.
  • ! Taking steps that are too large: Taking too large a step can lead to a loss of balance. Use a comfortable step length.

Primary Muscles

This exercise targets the quadriceps and hamstrings in your legs, the glutes, and the deltoids in your shoulders. Your core is also engaged for stability during the exercise.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, you can use dumbbells or a kettlebell during the front raise.
  • For beginners, the exercise can be simplified by leaving out the front raise and focusing on the lunge.
  • Another variation is to perform the lunge without bringing the rear foot back to the starting position between repetitions, which emphasizes the endurance of the leg muscles.
