Execution

  1. 1
Begin by positioning the barbell on your shoulders, just above the back of your neck. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Inhale and slowly bend your knees while pushing your hips back, as if you are sitting down on a chair.
  3. 3
Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Make sure your knees do not extend past your toes.
  4. 4
Hold this position for 2 seconds. Focus on contracting your muscles during this hold.
  5. 5
Exhale and push yourself back to the starting position by pressing your heels into the floor.

Benefits

The 2-second hold in the Barbell Squat creates increased muscular tension, leading to improved strength and muscle growth. It also improves knee and ankle stability, which is essential for both daily activities and other sports.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Going too deep: This can cause unnecessary stress on the knees. Make sure your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  • ! Not keeping your back straight: A rounded back can lead to injuries. Focus on keeping your back straight throughout the entire exercise.
  • ! Knock-knees: Do not let your knees collapse inward. This can lead to uneven loading and possible injuries.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. It also stabilizes the abdominal muscles and the muscles around the ankles and knees.

Possible Alternatives

If the Barbell Squat with a 2-second hold is too intense, you can start with bodyweight squats with a hold or a dumbbell goblet squat. For more of a challenge, try extending the hold time or adding more weight to the barbell.
