Lower yourself until your thigh is parallel to the floor, or as low as is comfortable for you.
  6. 6
Drive yourself explosively back to the starting position.
  7. 7
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination by training one leg at a time.
  • Helps correct muscular imbalances between the legs.
  • Increases strength and stability in the lower-body muscles.
  • Engages the core muscles for additional stability during execution.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning the torso too far forward, which can place additional pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Allowing the working knee to move too far past the toes, which can lead to knee problems.
  • ! Not fully extending the leg when returning to the starting position, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteus maximus. The hamstrings and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the barbell is too challenging, you can start with bodyweight or dumbbells at your sides.
  • For an additional challenge, increase the height of the elevated surface or add extra weight.
  • To increase the focus on the quadriceps, try the Bulgarian Split Squat with your front foot on an elevated surface.
