Barbell Front Squat

The Barbell Front Squat exercise is an effective way to train not only your lower body but also improve your core stability and balance. By placing the barbell at the front of your shoulders, you force yourself to remain more upright, resulting in a more intense workout for your quadriceps while also engaging your back and abdominal muscles.

Execution

  1. 1
Start with the barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height. Stand under the bar so that it rests on your shoulders and against your throat. Cross your arms and grip the bar for stability.
  2. 2
Take a deep breath, push your elbows up, and lift the barbell off the rack. Take a step back and position your feet shoulder-width apart with your toes pointing slightly outward.
  3. 3
Lower yourself by moving your hips backward and downward, as if sitting on a chair. Keep your back straight and chest up. Make sure your elbows remain high throughout.
  4. 4
Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Make sure your knees remain in line with your toes.
  5. 5
Drive yourself explosively back up to the starting position by pressing your heels into the floor.

Benefits

Barbell Front Squat exercises offer unique benefits compared with traditional squats. They force you to maintain better posture and increase activity in the quadriceps and core, leading to improved strength and stability. In addition, they reduce pressure on your lower back, making them a potentially safer alternative for people with back problems.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Letting the elbows drop: This can lead to a forward-leaning posture and increase pressure on the lower back. Keep your elbows high to prevent this.
  • ! Leaning too far forward: This can reduce the effectiveness of the exercise and increase the risk of injury. Make sure your back remains straight and your chest stays up.
  • ! Not squatting deep enough: To get the most out of the exercise, it is important to squat to at least parallel.

Targeted Muscles

The primary muscle groups engaged during the Barbell Front Squat are the quadriceps. In addition, the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, erector spinae (back muscles), and core are intensely engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the Barbell Front Squat, you can consider doing goblet squats with a dumbbell or kettlebell for a similar workout with less technical complexity. Another option is the Zercher squat, in which the barbell is held in the crooks of the elbows, offering a different challenge for the core and upper back.
