Execution
-
1
Begin by finding a pull-up bar or a similar sturdy object that you can hang from.
-
2
Grip the bar with an overhand grip, with your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
-
3
Hang with your legs together and your feet off the floor.
-
4
Then pull your knees up toward one side of your body, toward your elbow.
-
5
Slowly and under control, lower your legs back to the starting position.
-
6
Repeat the movement on the other side.
-
7
Perform multiple sets of 10–15 repetitions per side, depending on your fitness level.
Benefits
- Strengthens and defines the obliques for a more shaped waist.
- Improved core stability and strength, contributing to better performance in other exercises and daily activities.
- Increases grip strength through hanging.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly: Use a controlled movement to train the muscles effectively and prevent injuries.
- ! Not rotating fully: Make sure you really engage your obliques by bringing your knees as close as possible to your elbow.
- ! Squeezing the bar too hard: This can lead to unnecessary fatigue in your forearms. Keep your grip firm but relaxed.
Primary Muscles
Hanging Oblique Crunches primarily target the obliques, but also engage the entire core, including the rectus abdominis and the deeper core muscles. In addition, your forearms and grip get a good workout from hanging.
Possible Alternatives
- If you are not yet strong enough to hang, try Oblique Crunches on the floor as an alternative.
- For an extra challenge, you can wear a weighted vest or hold a dumbbell between your feet.
