Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing the barbell on the floor in front of your feet. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Bend your knees slightly and hinge forward from your hips, keeping your back straight. Grip the barbell with a supinated grip (palms facing you), slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Inhale and pull the barbell upward toward your lower ribs, keeping your elbows close to your body.
  4. 4
Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top and hold this position briefly.
  5. 5
Exhale and lower the barbell under control to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves the strength and size of the back muscles.
  • Strengthens the biceps and forearms through the supinated grip.
  • Helps improve posture by strengthening the upper back and shoulders.
  • May contribute to better performance in other lifts and daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight, which can lead to poor form and potential injuries.
  • ! Failing to keep your back straight, which can strain the lower back.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to move too far away from the body during the exercise, reducing its effectiveness.
  • ! Not fully squeezing the shoulder blades together at the top of the movement.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the latissimus dorsi (lats), rhomboids (the diamond-shaped muscles between your shoulder blades), erector spinae (back extensors), and to a lesser extent the biceps and forearms.

Possible Alternatives

  • Barbell Bent-Over Row with a pronated grip (palms facing away from you) for a different emphasis on the back muscles.
  • Dumbbell Rows for a greater range of motion and the ability to train each side separately.
  • Inverted Rows as a bodyweight alternative that also trains the back muscles.
