Execution

  1. 1
Find a stable elevated surface such as a step or a low bench. Hold a weight in each hand at your sides.
  2. 2
Stand parallel to the elevated surface with your feet hip-width apart.
  3. 3
Place the foot nearest to the elevated surface on it and drive through your heel to lift yourself up until you are standing fully on the elevated surface.
  4. 4
As you come up, keep your back straight and your chest lifted.
  5. 5
Slowly step back down to the starting position and repeat the movement. Switch legs after a set of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination through unilateral training.
  • Increases muscle strength and endurance, especially in the lower-body muscles.
  • Helps burn calories through the combination of strength and movement.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving up or down too quickly: Use controlled movements to get the most out of the exercise and prevent injuries.
  • ! Arching the back: Keep your back straight and your core engaged to maintain proper posture.
  • ! Using weights that are too light or too heavy: Start with a weight that allows you to perform the exercise correctly and increase it gradually.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and glutes. The hamstrings, calves, and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • Without weights: Start without weights to focus on technique and balance.
  • Increase the height of the elevated surface: For more of a challenge, use a higher elevated surface to increase the intensity.
  • Add a knee drive: Drive your knee up toward your chest after stepping onto the elevated surface for additional core activation.
