Kettlebell Swing
The Kettlebell Swing is a dynamic exercise that combines strength, endurance, and explosiveness. It is a versatile movement that helps you improve your fitness and build muscle mass.
Execution
-
1
Place your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, with the kettlebell on the floor between your feet.
-
2
Bend your knees slightly and keep your back straight while gripping the kettlebell with both hands.
-
3
Start the movement by pushing your hips back and letting the kettlebell swing between your legs.
-
4
Explosively extend your hips and knees to swing the kettlebell upward and forward to approximately chest height. Make sure to drive the movement with your hips rather than pulling with your arms.
-
5
Controlledly swing the kettlebell back between your legs while pushing your hips back again.
-
6
Repeat this movement for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves explosive power, which is useful for virtually every sport.
- Increases endurance and cardiovascular capacity.
- Helps burn fat due to the high intensity of the exercise.
- Strengthens the core and improves lower-back stability.
Common Mistakes
- ! Swinging the kettlebell with the arms instead of the hips.
- ! Arching the back during the exercise, which can lead to injuries.
- ! Not fully extending the hips at the top of the swing.
- ! Using a kettlebell that is too heavy, causing technique to deteriorate.
Targeted Muscles
The Kettlebell Swing primarily trains the muscles in your posterior chain, including the hamstrings, glutes, lower back, and to a lesser extent the shoulders, upper back, and abdominal muscles.
Possible Alternatives
- Single-Arm Kettlebell Swing: Perform the swing with one arm to challenge the core more and improve stability.
- American Kettlebell Swing: Swing the kettlebell overhead for a greater challenge and to engage the shoulder muscles more.
- Kettlebell Deadlift: A good alternative if you are not yet ready for the dynamic movement of the swing.
