Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on an exercise mat with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell on your hips with both hands.
  2. 2
Lift one leg off the floor, extending it or keeping it bent at a 90-degree angle.
  3. 3
Drive through the heel of the leg that remains on the floor and lift your hips toward the ceiling. Make sure your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees.
  4. 4
Hold this position briefly, then slowly lower your hips back to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Benefits

  • Effectively strengthens the glutes and hamstrings.
  • Improves core stability and balance.
  • May help reduce lower back pain by strengthening the lower back.
  • Improves posture by strengthening the postural muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lifting the hips too high, which can lead to overloading the lower back.
  • ! Failing to distribute your weight evenly across the foot that remains on the floor.
  • ! Lowering the hips too quickly, causing tension in the muscles to be lost.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the gluteus maximus, but also engages the hamstrings, lower back, and, to a lesser extent, the core muscles for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners: Start without a dumbbell or with a lighter weight to learn proper form.
  • To increase the intensity: Add more weight or place the foot that remains on the floor on an elevated platform.
  • Other variations: Try the exercise with both feet on the floor for a less intense variation, or add a resistance band around your thighs for extra resistance.
