Execution

  1. 1
Begin standing with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. 2
Step your right leg diagonally behind your left leg, as if performing a curtsy, while keeping the dumbbells at your sides.
  3. 3
Lower your hips until your left thigh is almost parallel to the floor. Make sure your knee does not move past your toes.
  4. 4
Push yourself back to the starting position by driving your left heel into the floor.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with your left leg and alternate sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination through its unique diagonal movement.
  • Strengthens the muscles around the hips and knees, contributing to better posture and a lower risk of injury.
  • Using dumbbells also improves grip strength and arm strength.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Stepping too far: Taking too large a step can lead to a loss of balance and unnecessary stress on the knees. Use a comfortable, controlled step.
  • ! Not keeping your back straight: It is important to keep your back straight and your core engaged to prevent injuries.
  • ! Pushing the knees too far forward: Make sure your knees do not move past your toes during the exercise.

Primary Muscles

The Dumbbell Curtsy Lunge primarily targets the glutes (gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus) and quadriceps. The hamstrings and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners: Perform the exercise without weights until you feel comfortable with the movement.
  • To increase the intensity: Use heavier dumbbells or add a pulse at the bottom of the lunge.
  • If you do not have dumbbells, you can also use kettlebells or even a sandbag for additional resistance.
