Execution:

  1. 1
Start on your hands and knees on a comfortable surface, with your knees beneath your hips and your hands beneath your shoulders.
  2. 2
Engage your abdominal muscles to keep your back stable.
  3. 3
Lift one leg, keeping your knee bent, and push your foot toward the ceiling as if you were trying to push something upward.
  4. 4
Keep your hips parallel to the floor and do not rotate your leg outward.
  5. 5
Slowly and controllably return your leg to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Benefits:

In addition to strengthening and shaping your buttocks, Donkey Kicks also help improve your posture and balance. By activating the stabilizing muscles in your core, this exercise contributes to a stronger midsection, which is essential for good posture.

Common Mistakes:

  • ! Lifting the leg too high, which can lead to tension in the lower back.
  • ! Rotating the hips, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Failing to keep the core active, which is essential for stability.

Primary Muscles:

The primary focus of Donkey Kicks is the gluteus maximus, the largest muscle in your buttocks. The gluteus medius and minimus, as well as the hamstrings and core muscles, are also engaged during the exercise.

Possible Alternatives:

To adjust the intensity of Donkey Kicks, you can place resistance bands around your thighs or ankles. Another variation is performing the exercise on a stability ball, which requires additional stability and therefore activates the core more. For beginners, adding a mat under the knees can make the exercise more comfortable.
