Execution

  1. 1
Begin standing with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2
Step your right foot diagonally behind your left leg, as if performing a curtsy.
  3. 3
Lower your hips until your left thigh is almost parallel to the floor. Make sure your left knee does not extend past your toes.
  4. 4
Push yourself back to the starting position by driving your left heel into the floor.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with your left leg, alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves lower-body strength and tone.
  • Increases the body's stability and balance.
  • Helps correct muscle imbalances.
  • Improves hip flexibility.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Stepping too far: Taking too large a step can lead to a loss of balance. Make sure your step is comfortable and controlled.
  • ! Knees extending past the toes: This can place pressure on the knees. Make sure your knees do not extend past your toes during the exercise.
  • ! Not keeping your back straight: Leaning your torso forward can lead to back pain. Keep your back straight and your core engaged.

Primary Muscles

The Curtsy Lunge primarily targets the glutes (gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus), quadriceps, and hamstrings. The inner thigh muscles (adductors) and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • Weighted Curtsy Lunge: For extra resistance, hold a dumbbell in each hand during the exercise.
  • Curtsy Lunge Pulse: Add a small pulse at the bottom of the movement to increase the intensity.
  • Sliding Curtsy Lunge: Use a slider or towel under your back foot for a smoother movement and an additional challenge.
