Execution

  1. 1
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and grip the barbell with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  2. 2
Bend your knees slightly and hinge forward from your hips, keeping your back straight. Your torso should be nearly parallel to the floor.
  3. 3
Let the barbell hang with your arms extended and your palms facing toward you.
  4. 4
Pull the barbell up toward your lower ribs by driving your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades together.
  5. 5
Slowly and controllably lower the barbell back to the starting position.

Benefits

In addition to building muscle mass, the bent-over barbell row also helps improve posture and reduce back pain by strengthening the muscles around your spine. It is also a functional exercise that mimics movements in everyday life, thereby improving your overall physical performance.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rounded back: Make sure your back stays straight throughout the entire exercise to prevent injuries.
  • ! Too much weight: Start with a lighter weight to ensure proper form before increasing the weight.
  • ! Elbows too far from the body: Keep your elbows close to your body to activate the correct muscles.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the latissimus dorsi, the rhomboids between your shoulder blades, the trapezius in the upper back, and the biceps.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise or do not have a barbell available, here are some alternatives:

  • Dumbbell Rows: Perform the same movement with dumbbells instead of a barbell. This can also help correct any imbalance between the left and right sides of your body.
  • T-Bar Rows: A variation that offers a different angle for the back muscles, which can lead to more variety and muscle growth.
  • Inverted Rows: For beginners or people with back problems, this bodyweight exercise can be a good alternative.
