Tabletop Crunches
Want to strengthen your core while also improving your balance and stability? Try Tabletop Crunches. This exercise is a variation of the traditional crunch, but the tabletop position of your legs increases the intensity and places more focus on the lower abdominal muscles.
Execution:
- Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
- Lift your feet off the floor and bring your knees above your hips so that your shins are parallel to the floor. This is the tabletop position.
- Place your hands behind your head without pulling on your neck.
- Exhale and crunch upward by lifting your shoulders off the floor. Keep your lower back on the floor.
- Inhale and slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
- Repeat this movement for the desired number of repetitions.
Primary Muscles:
- Rectus Abdominis (the 'six-pack' muscles)
- Obliques (side abdominal muscles)
- Transversus Abdominis (deep abdominal muscles)
Benefits:
- Strengthens the entire core
- Improved balance and stability
- Helps develop a tighter, flatter stomach
Common Mistakes:
- Pulling on your neck instead of using your abdominal muscles to lift your shoulders.
- Letting your lower back lift off the floor, which can lead to back pain.
- Performing the movement too quickly. Focus on movement quality rather than quantity.
Possible Alternatives:
- If you find the exercise too difficult, try traditional crunches first to build strength.
- To increase the intensity, you can hold a small weight on your chest while performing the crunches.
- For an extra challenge, try Bicycle Crunches to involve torso rotation and the obliques more.
