Hollow Hold
The Hollow Hold is a demanding core-strengthening exercise that helps you build stability and endurance in your core. This exercise is unique because it trains not only your abdominal muscles but also activates your deeper core muscles, which is essential for good posture and preventing injuries.
Execution
-
1
Lie on your back on a comfortable surface with your legs extended and your arms extended overhead.
-
2
Engage your abdominal muscles and lift your shoulders and legs off the ground. Make sure your lower back remains in contact with the ground.
-
3
Your arms and legs should remain extended, with only your lower back staying in contact with the ground. Your body now forms a kind of 'banana' shape.
-
4
Hold this position while continuing to breathe. Start with 10 seconds and build up to longer periods.
-
5
Slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
Benefits
The benefits of the Hollow Hold include improved posture, better performance in other exercises through a stronger core, and a reduced risk of back pain. It also helps improve your balance and stability in everyday life and during sports activities.
Common Mistakes
- ! Not actively engaging your core, which can lead to an arched back and pressure on your lower back.
- ! Holding your legs and arms too high or too low, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
- ! Holding your breath; make sure you continue breathing so you can keep your core muscles effectively engaged.
Primary Muscles
The Hollow Hold targets the rectus abdominis, obliques, transversus abdominis, and even the hip flexors and muscles in your lower back. It is a complete core workout that contributes to a strong and stable torso.
Possible Alternatives
If the Hollow Hold is too challenging, you can start with your knees bent and your arms by your sides. For more of a challenge, try the Hollow Rock, where you rock back and forth in the Hollow Hold position, or add weight to your hands or feet.
