Execution

  1. 1
Find an incline bench and set it to an angle of approximately 30 to 45 degrees.
  2. 2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and lie chest-down on the bench, with your feet firmly on the floor.
  3. 3
Let your arms hang straight down, with your palms facing each other.
  4. 4
Take a deep breath and raise your shoulders as high as possible toward your ears without bending your arms.
  5. 5
Hold the top position briefly, then slowly lower your shoulders again.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves posture by strengthening the upper back and shoulders.
  • Helps reduce neck and shoulder pain by strengthening the surrounding muscles.
  • The incline position provides unique muscle activation that is not achieved with standard shrugs.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight, causing the movement to be performed incompletely or with poor form.
  • ! Not moving the shoulders fully up or down, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Performing the movement too quickly, preventing optimal muscle activation.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the trapezius and, to a lesser extent, the deltoids and rhomboids.

Possible Alternatives

  • Standing dumbbell shrug: For those who find the incline position too challenging, the standing version can be a good alternative.
  • Barbell shrug: An alternative that requires more stability and allows you to lift heavier weights.
  • Smith machine dumbbell shrug: Provides more stability and is a good intermediate step toward freer exercises.
