Execution

  1. 1
Begin with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward.
  2. 2
Keep your back straight and chest up as you move your hips backward and downward as if you were sitting on a chair.
  3. 3
Make sure your knees stay in line with your toes and do not cave inward.
  4. 4
Powerfully push yourself back to the starting position by pressing your heels into the floor.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves the strength and flexibility of the lower-body muscles.
  • Increases core stability and supports better posture.
  • Helps burn calories and may contribute to weight loss.
  • Strengthens the muscles around the knees and ankles, reducing the risk of injury.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward with the upper body, which can place pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Knees caving inward, which can lead to knee pain.
  • ! Not squatting deep enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Lifting the heels off the floor, which reduces stability.

Main Muscles

The squat primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs), hamstrings (back of the thighs), glutes, and to a lesser extent the lower back and core.

Possible Alternatives

  • Sumo squat: A wider foot stance places more emphasis on the inner thighs and glutes.
  • Split squat: One leg forward and the other behind you to increase the focus on each leg and train balance.
  • Box squat: Squat down to a box or bench to keep the depth consistent and improve technique.
  • Weighted squat: Add weights (dumbbells or a barbell) to increase the intensity.
