Half Squats

Half squats are a fantastic exercise for anyone who wants to strengthen their lower body without having to reach the full depth of a traditional squat. This variation offers unique benefits, such as less stress on the knees and the opportunity to focus on strengthening the quadriceps and glutes.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes pointed slightly outward.
  2. 2
Place your hands on your hips or extend them in front of you for balance.
  3. 3
Slowly bend your knees as if you were sitting on a chair, but stop when your thighs are parallel to the ground.
  4. 4
Press your heels firmly into the ground and straighten your legs to return to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

This exercise is ideal for building strength in the lower half of the body, improving knee flexibility, and reducing the risk of injury. It is also an excellent way to improve squat technique without having to reach full depth, which is especially useful for beginners or people with knee problems.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Back position: Make sure your back remains straight during the exercise. Avoid leaning forward or rounding your back.
  • ! Knees: Do not let your knees cave inward. Make sure they remain aligned with your toes.
  • ! Depth: Make sure you do not go too deep. Stop when your thighs are parallel to the ground.

Primary Muscles

The half squat primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs) and the gluteus maximus (glutes). The hamstrings (back of the thighs) and core are also lightly engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

To adjust the intensity of the half squat, you can add weights, such as dumbbells or a barbell. For a lighter variation, you can also perform the exercise without weights or with a resistance band around your thighs. Other variations include the sumo half squat (with a wider stance) or the split squat (one leg forward and one leg back).
