Dumbbell One-Arm Snatch

The Dumbbell One-Arm Snatch is a dynamic exercise that combines strength, speed, and coordination. This exercise is unique because it challenges your entire body, focusing on explosive power from your lower body while your upper body, particularly your shoulders and arms, also works hard.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin with a dumbbell on the floor between your feet, with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Bend your knees and hips to grasp the dumbbell with one hand, with your palm facing you.
  3. 3
Explosively lift the dumbbell by driving your hips forward and extending your arm, as if you want to bring the dumbbell overhead in one fluid movement.
  4. 4
Once the dumbbell reaches shoulder height, bend your elbow and drive yourself under the dumbbell, finishing with the dumbbell overhead and your arm fully extended.
  5. 5
Lower the dumbbell back to the starting position in a controlled manner and repeat.

Benefits

  • Improves explosive power and speed.
  • Increases coordination between your upper and lower body.
  • Helps develop a strong, functional core.
  • May contribute to improved sports performance.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Going too heavy: Start light to master the technique.
  • ! Incorrect posture: Keep your back straight and prevent your knees from collapsing inward during the exercise.
  • ! Lifting the dumbbell too far away from your body: Keep the dumbbell close to your body for greater control and efficiency.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains your shoulders, trapezius, quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteus maximus, and to a lesser extent your arms, back, and core for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • Use a kettlebell instead of a dumbbell for a slightly different grip and weight distribution.
  • Try the exercise with a lighter weight and more repetitions for endurance.
  • If the movement is too complex, start with a Dumbbell Clean and Press to break the movement into two parts.
