Chair Step-Up
The Chair Step-Up is a simple but effective exercise that you can do using only a sturdy chair. This exercise helps strengthen your legs and glutes while also improving your balance and coordination.
Execution
-
1
Find a sturdy chair and place it against a wall to prevent it from sliding.
-
2
Stand facing the chair and place your right foot firmly on the seat.
-
3
Push through your right foot and lift yourself up until your right leg is straight. Keep your left leg slightly bent or hovering beside the chair.
-
4
Slowly and controllably lower yourself back to the starting position.
-
5
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.
Benefits
In addition to strengthening the muscle groups mentioned above, the Chair Step-Up also helps improve your balance and coordination. It is a functional movement that can improve the way you climb stairs or hills.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing it too quickly: It is important to perform the movement in a controlled manner to get the most out of the exercise and prevent injuries.
- ! Not fully extending: Make sure your leg is fully extended when you are at the top of the movement for maximum muscle activation.
- ! Using the wrong chair: Make sure the chair is sturdy and stable to prevent accidents.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs), hamstrings (back of the thighs), glutes, and, to a lesser extent, the calf muscles.
Possible Alternatives
To adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can hold weights during the movement or use a higher chair. For beginners, lowering the chair height or using a step can make the exercise more accessible.
