Standing Oblique Crunch
The Standing Oblique Crunch is an effective exercise for strengthening your side abdominal muscles, also known as the obliques. This exercise not only helps create a toned waist, but also improves your balance and stability.
Execution
-
1
Begin with your feet shoulder-width apart and your hands behind your head or by your sides.
-
2
Inhale and then bend sideways from your waist, trying to bring your elbow toward your knee. Make sure your movement is controlled and comes from your obliques.
-
3
Return to the starting position as you exhale.
-
4
Repeat the movement on the other side.
-
5
Do 2–3 sets of 10–15 repetitions per side.
Benefits
- Strengthens and defines the side abdominal muscles.
- Improves overall core stability and balance.
- May help reduce waist circumference.
- Improves flexibility and range of motion in the waist.
Common Mistakes
- ! Moving too quickly: Focus on the quality of the movement rather than the speed.
- ! Bending too far: Do not bend too far to prevent injuries. Listen to your body.
- ! Straining the neck: Keep your neck in a neutral position to avoid tension.
Targeted Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the external and internal obliques. The deeper abdominal muscles and the muscles around your hips are also engaged to a lesser extent.
Possible Alternatives
- To increase the intensity, you can hold a dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand during the exercise.
- For lower intensity, you can make the movement smaller or perform it without weights.
- Alternatively, you can try Bicycle Crunches for a variation that trains both the obliques and other abdominal muscles.
