Execution

  1. 1
Find an exercise ball large enough for your feet to rest flat on the floor when you lie over it.
  2. 2
Lie face down on the ball and position it under your hips and lower abdomen.
  3. 3
Place your feet hip-width apart and firmly against the floor or a wall for extra stability.
  4. 4
Place your hands behind your head or cross them over your chest.
  5. 5
Inhale and slowly lower your upper body toward the floor.
  6. 6
Exhale as you lift your upper body by contracting your lower back muscles. Make sure to keep your back straight.
  7. 7
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

In addition to strengthening your lower back, this exercise also helps improve your posture and can reduce back pain. Using an exercise ball adds an element of balance, which means you also train your core stabilizers.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Pushing your back too far upward, which can lead to overloading.
  • ! Straining your neck by placing your hands behind your head and pulling too hard.
  • ! Losing control of the movement by going too quickly.

Main Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the erector spinae, the muscle group that runs along your spine. Your glutes and hamstrings are also engaged to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can try:

  • Extending your arms straight out in front of you to make the exercise more challenging.
  • A lighter variation is to place your hands on the floor for extra support.
  • For an extra challenge, you can wear a weighted vest or hold a weight plate during the exercise.
