Barbell Sumo Squat

  • Barbell Sumo Squat
  • Barbell Sumo Squat

Introduction: The Barbell Sumo Squat is a powerful variation of the traditional squat. Due to the wider foot stance and the position of the barbell, it places more emphasis on your inner thighs and glutes.

Execution: Begin by placing the barbell on a rack at shoulder height. Stand under the bar and position it comfortably across your upper back. Step back and place your feet wider than shoulder-width apart with your toes turned slightly outward. Keep your back straight and chest up, and slowly bend your knees and hips to lower yourself. Make sure your knees remain aligned with your feet. Lower until your thighs are parallel to the floor, then drive up powerfully by pushing through your heels.

Target Muscles: This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and adductors (inner thighs).

Benefits: The Barbell Sumo Squat helps build strength and mass in the lower-body muscles. It also improves hip flexibility and strengthens core stability.

Common Mistakes: A common mistake is leaning the torso forward, which can place pressure on the lower back. Make sure your chest stays up and your back remains straight. Another mistake is allowing the knees to collapse too far inward; keep them aligned with your feet.

Possible Alternatives: If the Barbell Sumo Squat is too challenging, first try the movement without weight or with a lighter barbell. For more intensity, you can use a dumbbell or kettlebell for the Goblet Sumo Squat, holding the weight in front of your chest.
