Barbell Hip Thrust
The Barbell Hip Thrust is a powerful exercise aimed at strengthening your glutes. The unique benefit of this exercise is that it not only strengthens your glutes but also contributes to core stability and lower-back health.
Execution
-
1
Find a flat bench and place it behind you. Sit on the floor with your shoulders against the bench and place a barbell across your hips.
-
2
Place your feet flat on the floor, approximately shoulder-width apart. Make sure your knees are bent.
-
3
Drive your heels into the floor and push your hips upward by contracting your glutes. Raise the barbell until your upper body and thighs form a straight line.
-
4
Hold this position briefly, then slowly lower your hips back to the starting position.
Benefits
- Improves the strength and shape of your glutes.
- Increases core and lower-back stability.
- Helps improve your posture.
- May contribute to better performance in other exercises and sports.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight: Start with a light weight to ensure proper form.
- ! Performing the movement too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner to achieve maximum muscle activation.
- ! Not coming fully up: Make sure your hips are fully extended in the top position.
Primary Muscles
The primary muscle groups trained with the Barbell Hip Thrust are the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, and lower back. Secondarily, you also work on core stability.
Possible Alternatives
- Without weight: If you are new to the exercise, start without weight to master the movement.
- Single-leg Hip Thrust: For an extra challenge, try the single-leg variation, keeping one leg extended during the exercise.
- Glute Bridge: A lighter variation is the Glute Bridge, which you perform without a bench and with your shoulders on the floor.
