Execution

  1. 1
Adjust the seat of the leg press machine so that your knees are slightly bent when your feet are flat on the platform.
  2. 2
Place your feet at the bottom of the platform with only the balls of your feet and toes touching the platform. Your heels should be able to move freely.
  3. 3
Push the platform away by pressing down through your toes and lifting your heels. Make sure to perform the movement in a controlled manner.
  4. 4
Briefly hold the top position, then slowly lower your heels again below the level of the platform for a full stretch of the calf muscles.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and develops the calf muscles.
  • Improves stability and balance in the lower legs.
  • Allows the intensity to be adjusted easily by changing the weight on the machine.
  • The controlled movement reduces the risk of injury.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movement too quickly without fully stretching or contracting the muscles.
  • ! Using too much weight, causing technique to deteriorate.
  • ! Not using the full range of motion, preventing the calf muscles from being trained optimally.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle group trained with this exercise is the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus). The exercise also challenges the stability of the ankles and lower legs.

Possible Alternatives

  • Standing calf raises with dumbbells or a Smith machine for a different variation.
  • Seated calf raises to place more emphasis on the soleus muscle.
  • Using a calf raise machine for a more isolated workout.
