Superman Hold
The Superman Hold is an effective exercise that targets strengthening your core and improving your posture. This exercise simulates Superman's flying position, hence the name, and offers a unique combination of benefits for your body.
Execution
-
1
Lie face down on a mat, with your arms extended in front of you and your legs straight behind you.
-
2
Engage your core and simultaneously lift your arms, chest, and legs off the ground. Your body now forms a slight arch.
-
3
Hold this position while continuing to breathe. Start with 10 to 15 seconds and gradually build up.
-
4
Slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
Benefits
- Improves posture by strengthening the back and shoulder muscles.
- Increases core stability and strength.
- Helps prevent back pain by strengthening the lower back.
Common Mistakes
- ! Lifting too high: It is important not to overdo it. You only need to lift your limbs a few centimeters off the ground.
- ! Forgetting to breathe: Make sure you continue breathing during the exercise to prevent dizziness.
- ! Straining the neck: Keep your neck in a neutral position by directing your gaze toward the floor.
Targeted Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the erector spinae, the muscles along your spine. Your glutes, shoulders, and hamstrings are also trained.
Possible Alternatives
- If the full Superman Hold is too challenging, start by alternately lifting your left arm with your right leg and vice versa.
- To increase the intensity, you can hold small weights in your hands during the exercise.
