Execution

  1. 1
Find a flat bench and place a dumbbell on one side of the bench.
  2. 2
Place your right knee and right hand on the bench so that your back is parallel to the floor. Your left foot is firmly planted on the floor.
  3. 3
Grasp the dumbbell with your left hand using a neutral grip, with your palm facing you.
  4. 4
Inhale and pull the dumbbell upward toward your hip, moving your elbow along your body. Make sure to pull your shoulder blade toward your spine.
  5. 5
Lower the dumbbell slowly and under control to the starting position while exhaling.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch sides.

Benefits

This exercise helps build a strong and broad back. It also improves grip strength and supports overall shoulder stability. Training each arm separately reduces muscle imbalances and improves core stability.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movement too quickly, which can lead to less effective muscle activation and an increased risk of injury.
  • ! Not fully extending the arm in the bottom position, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Rotating the torso too much during the exercise, which can shift the focus away from the back muscles.

Primary Muscles

The primary focus is on the latissimus dorsi, but it also trains the trapezius, rhomboids, rear deltoids, and biceps.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, you can pause when the dumbbell is closest to your hip.
  • For beginners, the exercise can be simplified by performing it standing and bent over a table or another stable surface instead of using a bench.
  • As an alternative to dumbbells, kettlebells or even a resistance band can be used to add variety to the workout.
